1. Step One: Stake Your Claim
Choosing your campsite is more than just finding a pretty view (though that certainly doesn't hurt!). Consider factors such as:
Level Ground: The more level the ground, the less work you'll have to do with leveling blocks. Plus, it makes your RV more stable!
Shade and Sun: You might want a balance here. Shade will keep your RV cooler, but if you've got solar panels, you'll want some sun hitting them. Also if it is a shaded site, check the surrounding trees for any problem branches.
Proximity to Facilities: How close is the site to amenities like restrooms, the camp store, or playgrounds? Depending on your needs, you might want to be closer to - or further from - these high-traffic areas.
Do the hookups at your potential site work properly? - There’s nothing worse than getting all set up only to find out next that there’s no water or that the power doesn’t work!
2. Step Two: Park It Like It's Hot
Now it's time to park that beast but remember the cardinal rule - never rush. It's better to take your time than to risk an accident.
Plan your route in. Think about your RV's length, height, and turning radius. You may need to swing wide or make multiple maneuvers to nestle into your spot just right. If you are traveling with a partner, try to keep calm and communicate clearly. Walkie-talkies are a good option but if you’re solo that’s ok too! You may need to consider investing in a backup camera system depending on your expertise.
Level & Chock
Once you're in the right spot, it's time to level your RV. If your RV doesn't have a built-in leveling system, manual leveling blocks are an inexpensive, effective alternative (we use Camco FasTen Leveling Blocks and have had no complaints). Place them beneath your RV's wheels in the necessary places to create an even base. The more level your rig, the more stable and comfortable it will be!
Next secure it with X-Chock Wheel Stabilizer Pair Chocks to prevent any unexpected rolling. The X-Chock is our personal favorite because they also help eliminate some of the extra bounce that can occur with Travel Trailers and 5th Wheels.
Remember, the key to perfect parking and setup is patience, precision, and safety. Practice makes perfect, so don't be discouraged if it takes a few tries to get right.
3. Step Three: Time for the Hook-Up Hoedown
Utilities are next on our checklist:
Water: First, attach a Camco Brass Water Pressure Regulator to prevent high pressure from damaging your RV's plumbing system. Then, connect your Camco 25ft TastePURE Drinking Water Hose between the campsite's water source and your RV.
Sewer: Attach your RhinoFLEX 20' RV Sewer Hose Kit to your RV's waste outlet. Confirm the connection is secure before attaching the other end to the sewer inlet at your site. Use gloves and ensure the connection is secure to avoid any leaks or odors.
Electricity: Ensure your Technology Research Surge Guard 44270 is plugged into the power pedestal to protect your RV's electrical system from any surges. Then, plug in your RV's power cord.
4. Step Four: Unfurl and Unwind
This step is all about making your RV campsite feel like a home away from home:
Awning: Unfurl your awning to provide shade and expand your living space. Be sure to retract it if high winds or storms are forecasted!
Outdoor Living Space: Lay down a Reversible Outdoor Patio/RV Camping Mat which can help to keep dirt outside of your RV. Then set out your portable camping chairs like the Kijaro Dual Lock Portable Camping Chairs. Don't forget some outdoor lighting for those cozy campfire nights.
Remember Fire Safety: Consider bringing with you a portable smokeless firepit like the Tiki Smokeless Fire Pit. Once you’re ready to go in for the night, utilize Tame the Flame Tiki Smokeless Fire Pit Cover that puts out the fire completely in just 15 minutes! It will keep the firepit SAFE for your children or pets. No more need to worry about little hands getting scorched by the firepit cover. Seriously, these two gear items alone will make your nightly campfires so easy!
Indoor Space: Check your refrigerator, food pantry, and get your interior setup just the way you like it.
5. Step Five: Check, Check, and Double-Check
Never underestimate a final check.
Hook-ups: Are your water, sewer, and electrical connections secure and leak-free?
Items: Is everything where it should be? Are all items still secured, and are doors closed and locked? Hope you closed it up well during travel so there are no surprises upon arrival!
Safety: Are your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors working? Do you have a fire extinguisher on hand?
Walk around inspection: Do one last trip around your campsite and double-check for any potential hazards
Conducting these final checks may seem like extra work, but it will help you to relax knowing your site is safe and secure.
By following this detailed guide, you're sure to have your RV set up swiftly and safely, leaving you more time to enjoy the great outdoors. Happy RVing, adventurers! 🚐💨
